0 Glacially Musical – Medevil – Conductor of Storms

  • August 5, 2016
  • by Asher
  • · Medevil

Medevil must have a time turner, because they have reclaimed the spirit of early metal. Not just the spirit, but the sound. The guitars have a classic tube amp sound with amazing sound. It also doesn’t hurt to hear the boys meshing on harmony licks and the addition of a few modern techniques keep their playing fresh….Though this is a self released record, it sounds nothing like one. This album is aurally crafted to perfection. Brickwalling, nope. Too quiet, nope. None of the indie traps are here and it’s a breath of fresh air. Medevil has taken all of the classically metal archetypes and created a second wave of traditional heavy metal. If this is what they can do on their debut, we should be hearing about these gents from Chiliwack, BC many times over the years.

Sonically, Howling Giant seem to be the missing link between Monster Truck and Mastodon, and they top it off with whacked-out, sci-fi lyrics about outer space.

“The album offers a lush sonic experience, carefully balancing impressive technical chops, detail-oriented composition and heavy riffs with emotional layers. It’s captivating from start to finish, and each new listen seems to uncover intricate details that were previously missed.” – Exclaim!

“it’s rewarding to find a band that hit the nail on the head with a perfect balance of the melodic and the aggressive within the spectrum of melodic death metal.” – Brutalism

“If you are a fan of bands like Bullet for My Valentine, Darkest Hour, and In Flames, you will definitely enjoy Ages Unsung. ” – Empire Extreme

“this is a pretty solid debut.  “Of Prometheus and the Sacred Flame,” “War of the Gods,” and “New World” all have some really killer hooks and great vocals that pulled me into it.” – Metal Trenches

“I’ve heard the whole album already… when I listen to it from start to finish, I think it’s something exceptional and indeed mindblowing. I’ve had great fun listening to it… I’ve listened to it 5 times now and this should be the album that everybody talks about”  – Rock Fanatic

“These guys have put out a fantastic album, and it is seriously worth a listen!” – Sentinel Daily

“There’s so much about ‘Ages Unsung’ that oozes of Chariots Of The Gods’ personality, but what’s most obvious is that here, we have a quintet which are masters of their craft, and with this record have allowed fans from a multitude of genres in for what should be a phenomenal ride for the band from here on out.” – Musicology
“There is a lot of melody on this record balancing out the heaviness Of Prometheus And The Flame has the Killswitch influence running through it, As The Sky Falls is a drumming masterclass, Resurrection brings back the Trivium sound while New World slows everything down as an atmospheric piece that explodes in it’s last part. Ages Unsung is an album that looks back to an early millennial period of music but brings it modern day showing that it’s still relevant. 8/10” – Musipedia of Metal

Blitzing out of Canada’s capital with their punishing hard-rock rooted in heavy metal, Chariots of the Gods has-been on one sole assignment since 2007: shredding endlessly in a neighborhood near you.

The five-piece band gave birth to their first EP “Reverence” in 2010. Their first full length album, “Tides of War”, was produced by music legend Glen Robinson (Queensryche, Gwar, Annihilator) in 2013.

In 2014, the band went on their first international tour in Cuba and were the first Canadian metal band to do so.

Now,  after a small hiatus and line up change, the Ottawa, ON based band return in 2016 full force set to storm the world with the musical assault that is their latest masterpiece: “Ages Unsung” slated for release on September 16, 2016. ‘Ages Unsung’ was recorded at The Grid with legendary Montreal producer Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Beyond Creation, Neuraxis).

“TIDES OF WAR has a lot going for it; production, packaging, speed, talent and intensity, the band has put out a strong debut and it’s most certainly worth checking out.” – Metal Rules

“There’s a lot on ‘Tides of War’ to pique the interest of either thrash or melodic death metal fans, and the non-stop galloping guitar sound is an impressive display of what the underground can achieve.” – MetalUnderground.com

“‘Tides of War’ offers music that is well done and fueled with the propensity of delivering solid melodic death/thrash.” – Blistering.com

“From the intro track “Overture” all the way to the final “Annihilation of the Gods,” Chariots of the Gods deliver an unrelenting sonic assault with the solitary goal of making your brain bleed, and bleed it shall…This is the best “Melodic Death-Thrash with nuances of Metalcore” I’ve ever heard, and I’m gonna go expand my collection. 5 out of 5 skulls. No question about it.” – Rock Revolt Magazine

“melodic death metal executed with precision” – Voir

“Fans of modern thrash, who like it furious, biting and yet melodic check Chariots of The Gods.” – Lords of Metal

“The musicianship is first-rate, with a dual-guitar attack that is extensively showcased with plenty of solos. The production from Glen Robinson (Queensryche, Annihilator) is also excellent. Chariots of the Gods are a band with a lot of promise, and their debut will certainly appeal to thrash and melodic death metal fans.” – About.com Heavy Metal

“It is heavy, brutal and energetic while also incorporating a fair amount of melody to boot!…This is an album that is definitely going to raise the bar in the extreme music scene for the remainder of the year. Pick this one up; you won’t regret it!” – PureGrainAudio.com

“CHARIOTS OF THE GODS are showing plenty of promise to be able to be one of Canada’s next big things out there” – Metal Observer

“With the vocals more firmly rooted in a hardcore punk range and guitars leaning towards thrash territory, the band is offering a whole lot to metal fans. Tides of War is the first full length from Chariots Of The Gods, but it shows a lot of depth in both song writing and musicianship for such a relatively young band. From ‘Seventh Weapon’ through ‘Ambrosian Wings’ and ‘Annihilation of the Gods’ the dual guitar work of Mathieu St-Armour and Dimitri Gervais fights for your attention and challenges you to keep up.” – Hellbound

“Chariots of the Gods might have the Canadian Metal album of the year on their hands. And why not? Tides of War, the band’s debut full length, does so much that’s right with metal. From the opening track, “Overture,” which serves as an invocation of the metal gods to the shredding solos to the rapid-fire drumming to the catchy riffs to the occasional breakdowns.

As a metal fan with a penchant for thrash, Tides of Wardefinitely satisfies, and if there’s one thing I love, it’s guitars that can carry the song’s hook without constantly relying on crunch-crunch chords. But don’t go thinking that this is a thrash metal album, it’s a definite blend of thrash, melodic death, and metalcore.” – Yell Magazine

“An incredibly professional production is at hand: drums are clear; vocals are on the perfect level with the instruments; even the soft and quiet moments are balanced just right so as to create bits of atmosphere against the heaviness. There is a pure love of metal evident in this debut and the production lets all the power, aggression, and passion through to the listener…the band confidently establishes their intention: a charge of solid and unyielding melodeath garnished with impeccable interludes, solos, and leads.” – MetalStorm

“CHARIOTS OF THE GODS, with their first full-length release “Tides Of War”,is sure to be the new buzz of the underground scene…Overall, the album is an eclectic, vibrant, and colorful release that really keeps listeners head banging all the way and appreciating the good work the band has put in. The production is clearly strong, coming from the hands of Glen Robinsonwho has worked with Metal legends such as ANNIHILATOR and QUEENSRYCHE…The band does its best, and boy is it good, to church out infectious hook after hook, coupled with blistering melodies and kickass solos backed by Jobin’s great vocals. Each band member shines in this album and their dedication and devotion to their music is clear from the start…The entire album is structured in a genius way—these guys are clearly gifted lads.” – Metal-Temple

“Splendid stuff from a young Canadian troupe that would appear to have all the tricks… I love their coruscating mix of Maidenesque harmonies (have a listen to the awesome Blind Assassin and tell me you ain’t impressed)” – MetalAsFuck

“”Tides of War” is an album that rivals classics by acts such as God Forbid, Shadows Fall, and Killswitch Engage in excellence and pays respectful homage to acts like In Flames, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, and Dark Tranquility. For my money, this debut album deserves the status as a melodeath-type of metal classic. 5/5″ – MetalMusicArchives

“The best thing about this band, in my view, is the powerful melodic style they bring to each song. The guitarists are especially strong on several tracks, including “Tides of War,” “Revillusion (1905),” and “Unbound.” I loved the instrumental track “Snow Falls on the White River (1914),” yet another piece of evidence that these guys have a keen sense of melody, at times, one that even approaches beauty. Mathiew St-Amour and Dimitri Gervais play their guitars with grace and precision and sound especially great on their harmonized parts. These guys have a bright future as twin guitar leads and I hope they’ll take advantage of what they can do together. Readers who like their guitars to come in pairs will love this album.” – SeaofTranquility

“COTG entice the listener with infectious hooks, associated melodies and some blistering solos out of the guitar work. If that is not justice enough for you to buy this, then listen to the intensity of Renaud Jobin’s vocals. This is a release that requires you to strap your balls down (if you have them of course!) when the volume is cranked up…They have a fantastic musical ability and a gift of song structure that exhumes listeners emotions that includes anger and conversely serenity and the need to throw the devil horns without too much though will therefore result. ‘Tides of War’ promotes Chariots of the Gods as real contenders in their field of metal, their field of glory and the rewards are presented for everyone on these exceptional fourteen tracks defining a generation of musically gifted individuals who do not rely purely on breakdowns to get their point across, it sounds effortless. Horn’s raised high gents! 4/5” – Brutalism.com

“Overture is quite sweet sounding and feels like a film score. Nothing compared to the monster that is waiting to be unleashed. Ferocious riffs and classic metal vocals. Drums blasting out the speed and blasts and the guitars giving it a chunky edge whilst maintains some harmony. Hatebreed hardcore edge but throws in the melody. Definitely an innovative sound amongst a sea of similar sounds. Chariots of the Gods definitely seem to offer something that little bit different. Taking the generic metal sound and throwing in delicious guitar solos with a conflicting vocal. Upbeat without being cheesy.” – Culutre Bomb Mag

”I’m honored to be a part of this project” – Glen Robinson (producer)

”It’s pretty good!” – Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)

”In my opinion, Chariots of the Gods is THE melodic thrash metal revelation in Canada this year” – Musique d’une Nation

”Excellent album full of energy […] I may have a man-crush on Chariots of the Gods”
Ondes Chocs

”I wouldn’t be surprised to see ‘Tides of War’ be a strong beginning this year in the field of melodic death metal.” Dagheisha

”Just pure metal […] it’s a real treat to the ears” – Metal Manic

”My first reaction was ”WOW!” […] If you like death metal, you have to get that CD” – WTFMusic.com

”It’s a masterpiece” – Radiorockdrummond.com

”Mathieu-Phillipe St-Amour is undoubtedly a promosing guitarist” – dagheisha.com

”A band to admire […] amazing collaboration of Heavy Metal and Death Metal […] no less than perfect” – Metal Temple

”An excellent band who knows what they are doing […] Listen to them and you’ll discover something great” – Dave Lemire (Concert promoter)

”Chariots of the Gods […] are doing everything right […] they are talented and powerful enough to show the world Canada rocks hard” – Metal Bite

”I am stoked to discover new talent from Ottawa […] Chariots of the Gods is an erruption waiting to happen”  -The Ottawa Epitaph

“Hands down, CHARIOTS OF THE GODS have worked hard and have improved their songwriting that shines in “Tides Of War” in every aspect. Don’t be fooled by the melodic Death Metal tag and consider the Canadians just another IN FLAMES wannabe because there is more than just catchy riffs and growling vocals. And don’t forget that CHARIOTS OF THE GODS come from Canada that is a most reliable source for high quality Metal. 8/10” – MetalKaoz.com

The album is good and really remembers me of the first bands I listened to when I got into progressive music – Dream Theater, Andromeda, Redemption, etc. -, with all their qualities and flaws. It’s a good album for those of you who relish this genre of music, so be sure to check back when it’s released, and listen to the three singles that are out now!

The Underbelly E.P itself is just 3 tracks & 11 minutes of absolute brutality. Imagine Meshuggah had a love child to Gov’t Mule & you pretty much have a fairly good idea what to expect…It’s just a homunculus of an album & it’s great to hear a young band making brutal math metal.
