Grimposium présente l’événement Doomed to Death les 4 et 5 août 2016
C’est avec une extrême fierté que Vivek Venkatesh vous convie à Doomed to Death (« condamnés à mort »), une grande célébration du cinéma, de la musique et de la recherche universitaire dans le domaine de la scène métal. Événement estival unique en son genre, le festival Grimposium proposera le vendredi 5 août un spectacle musical mettant en vedette des groupes phares du métal extrême, soit Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful et Cardinal Wyrm. En première partie, vous assisterez à une entrevue exclusive des membres fondateurs de Repulsion, véritables précurseurs des death métal et grindcore.
Le jeudi 4 août, le festival Grimposium projettera en première canadienne Death by Metal (« mort par le métal »), un documentaire retraçant la vie de feu Chuck Schuldiner, chanteur principal de deux groupes légendaires du métal extrême : Death et Control Denied. À cette présentation s’ajouteront un atelier de chant death métal, un panel sectoriel sur l’aspect économique du métal extrême ainsi qu’un symposium thématique. Toutes ces activités se dérouleront à l’Université Concordia.

Le spectacle réunissant Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful et Cardinal Wyrm aura lieu le vendredi 5 août, à 20 h, à la coopérative Katacömbes. Jason Netherton, chanteur et bassiste de Misery Index, affirme que sa formation « a très hâte de prendre part à Doomed to Death. C’est connu, les activités organisées pour Grimposium contribuent fantastiquement au métal extrême et à la musique underground. Nous sommes vraiment favorisés de participer à un show qui s’annonce inoubliable… Un mélange aussi explosif de groupes de musique, ce sera du plaisir à l’état pur! » Il en va de même pour Pranjal Tiwari, batteur et chanteur de Cardinal Wyrm : « Nous sommes impatients de retourner à Montréal, une de nos villes préférées. Depuis notre dernière visite, nous avons conçu un album de chansons inédites. Cette année, Grimposium a orchestré un événement aussi diversifié que prometteur. À preuve, il met en vedette une pléiade de musiciens légendaires issus d’une panoplie de sous-genres. Attendez juste que nous soyons en scène… L’idée d’entraîner le public dans les entrailles du doom métal ainsi que la perspective de donner encore plus d’intensité à la soirée nous stimulent au plus haut point! »
Activité gratuite ouverte au grand public, l’interview de Repulsion aura lieu à 16 h 30 à la coopérative Katacömbes. Membre fondateur du groupe , Scott Carlson répondra aux questions d’Albert Mudrian, du magazine Decibel, et de Jason Netherton, de la formation Misery Index. Ils parleront notamment de leur rôle dans la diffusion des genres death métal et grindcore, ainsi que de l’influence qu’a exercée Repulsion sur la scène mondiale du métal extrême.
Publique et gratuite, la projection du docu Death by Metal se tiendra le jeudi 4 août, dès 19 au cinéma VA-114 de l’Université Concordia. (Pour plus d’info, consultez la page Facebook de l’événement.) Après la présentation, le réalisateur Felipe Belalcazar se prêtera à une séance de questions. Avant celle-ci, Marie-Hélène Landry d’Obsolete Mankind et Sébastien Croteau de Necrotic Mutation animeront un atelier de chant death métal. De plus,Jason Netherton et Mark Kloeppel de la formation Misery Index, Michael Berberian de la maison de disques Season of Mist de même que Michelle Ayoub du collectif Broken Board Montréal participeront à un panel bilingue sur l’aspect économique du métal extrême.
Enfin, un symposium thématique – intitulé Doomed to Death – se déroulera de midi à 14 h 30 le jeudi 4 août au Département des sciences de l’éducation de l’Université Concordia (1610, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, salle FG-5.345). Pour la première fois depuis sa création, Grimposium organise une table ronde sur l’œuvre professionnelle et savante des figures de proue des groupes Misery Index et Vastum. À cette occasion, Jason Netherton et Mark Kloeppel de Misery Index, ainsi que Daniel Butler de Vastum, traiteront de cette discipline musicale qu’est le métal extrême. Dans cette perspective, ils exploreront les lieux de convergence de la psychanalyse, de l’étude des médias et de la gestion touristique. Enfin, ils présenteront leurs projets respectifs, qu’ils soient liés à leur carrière ou à leurs travaux de chercheurs aux cycles supérieurs. Lee Mellor, titulaire d’une bourse de doctorat du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH) et doctorant au programme d’études individualisées de l’Université Concordia, agira comme modérateur lors de cette activité ouverte au grand public. Grimposium organise des festivals et des colloques itinérants internationaux qui réunissent des musiciens, des artistes visuels, des journalistes, des auteurs et des dirigeants de maisons de disques de la scène mondiale du métal extrême. Vivek Venkatesh proudly presents a unique celebration of film, music and academic research in metal music studies titled Doomed to Death. This unique summer Grimposium festival will feature a live music event onAugust 5 with performances from extreme metal bands Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful and Cardinal Wyrm, preceded by an exclusive live interview with the founding members of death metal/grindcore veterans Repulsion.
And on August 4, Grimposium will host the Canadian premiere screening of Death by Metal – the biopic of Chuck Schuldiner, late frontman of the legendary extreme metal bands Death and Control Denied – as well as a death metal vocal workshop, an industry panel on the economics of extreme metal and an academic symposium, all hosted at Concordia University (VA114 Cinema, 1395 Rene-Levesque Ouest).

The Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful, and Cardinal Wyrm performance will take place at 20h00 on August 5 at Co-op Katacombes; tickets are $25 (Facebook event here; tickets on sale here). Jason Netherton, singer and bassist for Misery Index, says that the band “… is looking very much forward to Doomed to Death! TheGrimposium events are notably fantastic contributions to the extreme metal underground, and we are honored to be able to participate in this stellar event alongside such a ferocious mix of bands! Revel in Flesh!” Pranjal Tiwari, drummer and vocalist for Cardinal Wyrm states: “We can’t wait to return to Montreal, one of our favourite cities, and we have an album’s worth of new songs since the last time we played there. The bill that Grimposium has put together is a varied and interesting one with a bunch of stellar bands from different subgenres – we are very excited to bring the audience down into the belly of doom metal during our set, and lay a pall of heaviness over the evening’s proceedings.”
The live interview with Repulsion is at 16h30 at Co-op Katacombes; it is free and open to the public. Scott Carlson, a founding member of Repulsion will be interviewed by Albert Mudrian of Decibel Magazine andJason Netherton from Misery Index about their role in the development of the genres of death metal and grindcore, and the influence that Repulsion has had on the global extreme metal scene.
The Death by Metal screening is free to the public and will take place at 19h00 on August 4 at the VA114 cinemaat Concordia University (Facebook event here). There will also be a post-screening Q&A with director Felipe Belalcazar. The screening will be preceded by a death metal vocal workshop led by Marie-Hélène Landry ofObsolete Mankind and Sébastien Croteau of Necrotic Mutation. In addition, the event includes a bilingualpanel on the Economics of Extreme Metal with Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index),Michael Berberian (Season of Mist), and Michelle Ayoub (Broken Board Montreal).
Finally, the Doomed to Death Academic Symposium will be held from 12h00 – 14h30 on August 4 atConcordia University’s Department of Education (FG 5.345, 1610 Rue Ste Catherine). For the first time since its inaugural event, Grimposium will feature a symposium featuring the academic and professional work of members of Misery Index and Vastum. Daniel Butler from Vastum, as well as Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel from Misery Index will explore the intersection of psychoanalysis, media studies and tourism management in the domain of extreme metal music studies and showcase their respective graduate research and professional projects (abstracts and more information are available here). The session will be moderated byConcordia University’s Lee Mellor, a SSHRC doctoral fellow, and a PhD Candidate in the Individualised program. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
