Thanks to the Wacken Battle Canada, and my affiliation with my old German friends who run the mighty Wacken Festival, I will be crossing this fine land of ours soon to judge the many talented bands involved in the “Battle“. Canadian metal band ANNIHILATOR is the lifework of guitarist Jeff Waters. ANNIHILATOR is the biggest-selling Canadian heavy metal/thrash metal band in Canadian history with close to 3.5 million units sold.

Founded in 1984, the band took the metal scene by storm with their debut 1989 release “Alice In Hell”, upped the ante with 1990’s “Never, Neverland” and finished off their 3-record deal (Roadrunner Records/Sony/Epic) with “Set The World On Fire”.

2013 saw the release of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed Annihilator CD in close to 18 years: FEAST. Touring this record took the band (as always) to Europe but also brought huge attendance to a few South American runs… After close to 2 years of touring, ANNIHILATOR are back live in the summer of 2015 to play the Euro-festival circuit, including a night-time slot on the Wacken stage; the 3rd time for the band. The new and 15th studio ANNIHILATOR cd should drop at end of July on UDR Records & the band have already booked a headline Europe tour from Sept. to Nov. 2015.

Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition where band’s from across the country in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City will battle each other for one to be selected and join over 30 other countries for an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, which has been taking place in Wacken , Germany for the last 25 years. Toronto’s Crimson Shadows (2013 winners – video at Wacken) and Montreal’s Mutank (2014 winners – video at Wacken) have had that honour playing in front of thousands. This year’s festival will be taking place from July 30th to August 1st.

How it works:

Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals from the months of January to May 2015 selecting the top band to move forward to the national finals in Toronto, ON in June (date to be determined) with one being selected to perform at the 26th edition of Wacken Open Air taking place from July 30th to August 1st. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.

The finalists will be selected as follows.

1 finalist from BC (Vancouver & Victoria will face off)

1 finalist from Alberta (Calgary & Edmonton will face off)

2 finalists from Toronto, ON

1 finalist from Quebec (Montreal & Quebec City will face off)

1 finalist from Ottawa, ON

1 finalist from Saskatoon or Winnipeg (Saskatoon and Winnipeg will face off)
