Feb 18th – Blankfest Quebec IV – It’s About The Homeless; Nothing More, Nothing Less

In the cold they sit and in the cold they wait. Montreal’s homeless never have it easy as the city streets they live on are notorious for having brutal winters, with temperatures well below zero. For that reason, year after year, Montreal’s music community comes together to help keep warm. Blankfest Quebec is proud to announce its annual return for its 4th year in support of one of Canada’s oldest and largest homeless shelters, the Old Brewery Mission.

Every year Blankfest Quebec aids in raising awareness and clothing for Montreal’s homeless and over the last few years has raised nearly 2,000 winter clothing items for Montreal’s homeless.

“It is a great initiative. With the cold weather here, our clients at the Mission will truly appreciate it.” commented Matthew Pearce, President and CEO at the Old Brewery Mission.

This year’s 4th annual Blankfest Quebec will be hosted at Frite Alors (680 Ste-Catherine Ouest) on Saturday, February 18th with support from Montreal’s The Era Of… (featuring vocalist Matt McGachy of Cryptopsy, 3 Mile Scream & members of A Texas Funeral), punk rabble rousers Society’s Ills, jazz rock virtuosos RudeBeats and electronic progressive rockers Isolate Cast.

“People forget that after the holidays Montreal’s homeless are still in need and on the streets in below zero temperatures, risking frostbite and death due to exposure. The least we can do is keep them safe and warm and help the Old Brewery Mission by raising winter clothing for them.“. commented Blankfest Quebec organizer Jon Asher

About: Blankfest Quebec is organized by Jon Asher, in collaboration with the Old Brewery Mission, and was launched after Jon read about his friend, New York City indie rock veteran Kenn Rowell of The Baghdaddios, who founded Blankfest in 1997 and has been organizing the annual blanket fundraiser in New York City for the past 15 years.

In the past, Rowell says, Blankfest NYC has raised more than 6,000 total donations that have been distributed to the homeless in the New York City area and has inspired similar efforts in New Jersey, Manhattan and Nottingham, UK. Among the many distinguished artists who have performed at past international Blank-Fests are: Rothberg (EMI), Buddy Cage (Grateful Dead), Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) and Meg Griffin (Sirius Radio).

About the Old Brewery MissionSoothing homelessness. Solving homelessness.

For more than 120 years, the OBM is the largest network of shelters for homeless men in Quebec and the largest resource for homeless women in Canada, providing safe nighttime refuge to more than 125,000 homeless individuals and more than 338,000 meals per year, as well as transition and counselling services to help its clientele find the necessary stability and autonomy to rebuild their lives.

Thanks to the OBM’s transition programs, more than 3,000 people requested emergency assistance in the past year and more than 629 of these people no longer live in the streets.
